About the Chaos Courier

Mars Valley voters soundly reject Valley Council proposal

URBS VALLIS, Nov. 6 - From Noctis Labyrinthus to Orson Welles Crater, and even in the City (Urbs Vallis), voters in Tuesday's election soundly rejected the City Council- and Mars DevCo-backed ballot proposal to create a new council to oversee development across the Valles Marineris and surrounding areas.

Voters rejected the measure 57-to-38 percent in the City, and by roughly 9-to-1 in the other chasmata.

Overall, the Valley Council measure failed by roughly a 3-to-1 margin.

On the second ballot measure in Urbs Vallis, just over half of residents voted to rename their city Tithonia after their home chasma.

The City's longstanding name, Urbs Vallis, came in last behind write-in choices WestHill, for the WestHill Terraces section of the City, and Mars City.

WestHill won about a quarter of the votes on the name question, which helped propel WestHill resident and Council candidate Beata Bakken to a third place finish in the City Council race.

The City Council election saw three serving councillors unseated from the seven member body, including City Planning Commission President Marcus Wu.

In the Orson Welles/Shalbatana election, famed Mars builder Jeremiah Volcan won a seat on the renamed Xanthe Terra council along with former Survey Mars explorer Perpetua Heathering.

Volcan, who led construction of WestHill, the first major permanent habitation on Mars, is building a new settlement in the Shalbatana Vallis that has drawn sharp opposition from the Urbs Vallis Council.
